365 Days

Fuji-1
With baby Bear Butcher nearly here, SJayTayBay and I have tried to think of fun and creative ways to document the little guy beyond just instagram posts.  Given that, we recently decided to take advantage of the sweet Fujifilm camera that SJayTayBay got me for my birthday and embark on a 365 day challenge together in which we’ll take a snap every day for his first year of life.

In 2014 I did something similar as a means to work on photography skills and make better use of my DSLR.  It was a challenge to come up with a subject everyday and to take the photos on my own but the end result (see below) made it entirely worth while.

What’s fun about this challenge is that SJayTayBay and I will be doing this together and we’ll have a more than willing subject, or at least a subject that can’t get away.  This will also be a fun way of continuing to try and get better at taking pictures without the luxury of a digital camera in which you can just snap away without a cost per photo.

If you enjoyed my 365 day challenge montage be sure to check out the one Lucas did a few years before me which was what motivated me to take on the task.

Lastly, if you’re at all intrigued by daily challenges like this, make sure to check out Casey Neistat’s daily vlog on youtube.  It’s addicting, enjoyable, motivating, and a great little treat to throw into your morning coffee and oatmeal routine.

People Know Us

First LA Hat (1 of 1)

We’ve received incredible support from our family, friends, co-workers, baristas, and dog washers. People have graciously sent cards, yelled woo-hoo, shared their baby rearing advice that they swear is the one and only way to raise our child, and just been a great community for us during this pregnancy. I have to tip my hat (pun wasn’t initially intended) to our good friends the Hoppers who added a key item to our kids wardrobe in the form of a baby’s first 59Fifty New Era Dodger hat. The hat came in a box that literally had nothing in it but the hat, and thus led to an awkward debate as to who it may have come from and lots of unnecessary Dodger hat conversations with friends and family until we luckily figured out it was the Hoppers.  I had never seen one of these hats so it was a fun surprise and exciting to now have a Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear hat. I should note that my brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Megan, have often recommended we name our kid Bear (although Friendly Neighborhood is their new favorite), which would make a great baseball name, “now batting, Bear Butcher.” They also have provided sweet Dodgers onesies, so our little guy is going to be decked out for all the games. I wish I could call out everybody and the amazing gifts we’ve been showered with but for now I had to start with at least this sweet little hat. Go blue!

The Motivators

FIrst UltrasoundOn 11/08/2014 we found out that SJayTayBay was pregnant and naturally both immediately yelled “let’s start a blog!” It was a great relief to know that we both agreed on something as important as this when bringing a new life into the world.

In reality the blog idea has been something that both SJayTayBay and I have been intrigued by for a while, but we’re going to use the Baby as our excuse to get this going.  Some of my close friends have done a great job using blogs as a way to share stories with friends and family. I imagine it’s highly likely that for the first few months, or even years of this our lives, this will revolve around our kid, but our goal is to also use this as a chance to be creative on a regular basis whether via photos, writing, or sharing other interests.  We also hope that this may preserve our Instagram cred by directing more of our family-related stuff here.

SJayTayBay has some previous blogging experience as a young 20-something living the dream in Seattle, where there’s so little sun you have nothing better to do than to blog.  I’ve enjoyed browsing blogs but am not as good at setting a routine of reading blogs on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis even though there are blogs by friends, family, and professionals that I always enjoy. Here are some blogs I hope to channel in my postings:

  • thecroakingfrog.com – run by SJayTayBay’s brother, it’s a great site where Ben uses his superior writing skills to review movies and tv shows, which often make me re-consider my thoughts on movies because he states his arguments so eloquently.
  • picklesandchurros.wordpress.com – my friends Bree and Lucas created this site as a family blog where the primary focus has been the documentation of their daughter and family from the professional view of Lucas’ camera lens. All things photography that I’ve learned and try to do are thanks to Lucas’ mentorship.
  • iamdavidblakefischer.wordpress.com – The funniest writer I personally know, Dave Fischer.  He makes it seem so easy and natural that I often mistakenly think I can be witty too.
  • dodgersdigest.com – naturally a dodgers blog needs to be featured and there’s no better group of dodgers writers I know than these guys.

We’ll see what SJayTayBay has to say in her intro blog, but hopefully between the two of us we can keep you entertained.
